The Leading Advocate for Workingwomen
The BPW/MI Foundation ... The Michigan BPW Foundation was incorporated in 1992 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit public foundation. Although the foundation is a separate entity from the Michigan Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc., two (2) MFBPW members sit on the Board of Directors of the Foundation. The remaining directors are elected by the Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation is looking for individuals who are willing to serve on various committees, write grants and help on events. If you are interested, please notify one of the Directors. The Foundation's goal is to provide women and girls with the training, education and skills they need to be productive and competitive in today's marketplace. This is accomplished by providing scholarships and grants for GED, college, advanced studies, leadership development, and Choices programs. Applications for scholarships and grants are available from the Foundation Office and are accepted year-round. The Foundation accepts contributions from individuals, corporations or estates. While it is preferred that contributions be unrestricted to allow maximum flexibility, contributors may designate funds to existing programs or to establish additional funds. For information about any BPW Michigan Foundation funds, programs or scholarships, or to make a donation, contact BPW Michigan Foundation
The BPW/MI Cancer Board of Overseers...
The Cancer Fund was established at the 1948 BPW/MI convention for the purpose of providing assistance and recognizing groups and individuals qualified to promote a program of cancer control and cancer education. The fund is maintained through individual and local organization contributions and through the interest on funds on deposit in banks in various cities in the state. All contributions are sent to the Cancer Fund Chair on the forms provided. They should be sent before March 15 of each year to be included in the report given at the State Convention. Many local organizations and individuals make contributions to honor a member for outstanding service to BPW or to the community. Contributions may be made in memory of a member or of someone in a member's family. All contributions are acknowledged. Those individual contributions made in honorarium or in memoriam are acknowledged by a card to the person so designated. This fund is maintained to help any local organization member who is in need of financial assistance for diagnoses, treatment, hospitalization or nursing care because of cancer or other diseases and illnesses, which could be considered catastrophic to our members. The fund may also be used for fellowships and scholarships to doctors and nurses specializing in cancer care. Since 1988, BPW/USA members have carried red purses as a visible symbol of the economic inequity that working women face! Members used the slogan,
“VOTE YOUR PURSE… for real change.”
In 2004, BPW/USA launched the Red Purse Society, open to men and women who support initiatives to achieve Economic Equity. Funds received from individuals and corporations will be used to support Equal Pay Day events, brochures, public service announcements and other advocacy initiatives designed to raise awareness and educate the public.
Please join us! Becoming an advocate will support pay equity initiatives on behalf of women we know, and women we’ll never meet, to secure a good job and achieve pay equity. The quest for economic equity continues today!
It is easy to join the Red Purse Society. Just send a check for at least $25 payable to BPW/USA and note the Red Purse Society Reserve Fund in the memo line.
